Mértola: “Village Museum” included in the Indicative List of Portugal to the World Heritage.
It was disclosed yesterday, the Indicative List of Portugal to the World Heritage by UNESCO National Commission. According to the municipality it is of “A milestone for the future, a historic date for Mértola”.
It is a historic moment for Mértola, as, on the one hand this recognition, apart from but 21 national goods, where the Montado is counted, Cultural Landscape, Vila Viçosa, renaissance ducal village, the Southwest Coast and Lisbon's Baixa Pombalina, the Portuguese Pilgrimage Paths to Santiago de Compostela, or Lavadas da Madeira, among others.
This indication, definitively consolidates the importance and recognition of Mértola's heritage, on the other hand, Inclusion on this list is another step won in the process of applying for the “Mértola” property to World Heritage.
The UNESCO National Commission, entity responsible for monitoring the Convention for the Protection of World Heritage in Portugal, Cultural and Natural thus places Mértola on the world map of goods with conditions to access the classification of world heritage of humanity.
It will be with the focus on this objective, that Mértola municipality and the Executive and Scientific Committees for Mértola's Candidacy for World Heritage, continue the work developed so far.
Indicative List of Portugal to World Heritage
The process of updating the Indicative List of Portugal to World Heritage was completed. dating from 2004 the previous Tentative List, the UNESCO National Commission started at the end of 2013 the process leading up to its update, in the period coinciding with Portugal's mandate in the World Heritage Committee (2013-2017).
Conducted by the UNESCO National Commission, entity responsible for monitoring the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of World Heritage in our country, Cultural e Natural, the process stemmed from UNESCO's recommendation that the Tentative Lists of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention be updated every 10 year old. It is recalled that the Tentative Lists are an indispensable prerequisite for the candidacy of properties to World Heritage.
