Montemor-o-Novo: 1Th Congress of Folklore and Ethnography of Alentejo performs-
The Portuguese Folklore Federation and its Regional Technical Council, promoted today at the Almeida Faria Municipal Library, in Montemor-o.Novo, the 1st Congress of Folklore and Ethnography of Alentejo, which is intended to be a landmark day for the ethno-folkloric movement of Alentejo and consequently the country.
According to the organization “This Congress aims to establish itself as a study space and meeting point for all organizations in the region linked to traditional culture”, where folklore groups hold particular importance, and to which the University of Évora is also associated (School of Social Sciences), the Pé de Xumbo Association, among others.
During the work, several communications and works will be presented, by different speakers, coming from various parts of Alentejo, who will focus their interventions on themes as varied as Alentejo singing, skirt fashions, the viola campaniça and the cante ao baldão, the lucky balls of old, the rigor of clothing as an identifying element of a community.
Folklore Groups, Associations and other entities involved in the study, analysis, preservation and dissemination of a vast set of Alentejo traditions, will meet in this true forum for the defense of Alentejo identity, focusing its greatest concern on the need to continue sharing experiences and knowledge among everyone, ensuring, so, the generational transmission of important traits and characteristics of the Alentejo people’s way of being.
