Moura: Carmo Convent awarded the management of the Convento do Espinheiro.


The Ministry of Economy announced on Wednesday, 21 August, that Convento do Carmo, Moura, became the 9th awarded Property Program Revive.

According to the available information, and revealed by the online edition of ODigital.pt, "Still recovery to create a hotel with 4 stars, about 50 bedrooms, was awarded the management of the Convento do Espinheiro (SPPTH- Promotion Society of Hoteliers and Tourism Projects), an estimated investment of about 6 millions of euros."

The new hotel is expected to open 2022, under a concession 50 years for tourism.

The Convento do Carmo, built in 1251, was the first of the Carmelite Order founded in the Iberian Peninsula. In the sixteenth century it has undergone major changes, having been built at that time the church, cloisters and chapels.

It was in this convent that left the monks who founded the Convento do Carmo, in Lisbon.

The property is located in the historic center of Moura, near the castle and the municipal library Moura and the set that includes the church and the convent cloister is classified as property of public interest since 1944.

The Carmo Convent is one of the properties inscribed on Revive, a joint program of the Ministries of Economy, Culture and Finance in collaboration with the local authorities. The aim of this program value and recover the unused assets, enhance the attractiveness of regional destinations and the development of various regions of the country. So far they have been released 18 contests under the Revive. Currently, are open tenders for the award of the Monastery of Lorvão, in Penacova, Castle of Cerveira and Ínsua Fort, Caminha.
