Odemira: Motion against the closure of the Prison Establishment female.
The Assembly and the City Council approved Odemira, unanimously, a motion against the closure of the Prison of Odemira, an intention of the Government announced 2017.
Created 1995 to meet the accommodation needs of the female population in the South, the Prison of Odemira has been subject to improvement works on their premises, with significant investments. Already in 2005 It had been disclosed the government's intention to close the establishment, having the Municipal Assembly and the executive city council expressed its opposition.
MPs and mayors of Odemira stress that the existence of this Establishment “is an important factor to combat desertification of the territory and at the same time an incentive to economic growth”, and providing various direct and indirect jobs.
It is also valued ” that the direction of Odemira Prison has a functional coordination with local authorities in the reintegration of inmates into the labor market, consistently taking place for inmates in the local labor market either in the municipality of Odemira or in several agricultural companies in the region (as Vitacress or Driscolls).”
The Assembly and the City Council consider that the Prison of Odemira “contributes daily to the appreciation of the valences and values ​​of prison services and the importance of paradigm shift and approach the theme probation.”
The Municipal Assembly of Odemira, in meeting 14 December 2017, approved, unanimously, Motion against the closure of the Prison and the promotion of a working group, with representatives of the various local government bodies of the Municipality of Odemira, to sensitize the government and prevent the closure of the establishment. The City Council approved Odemira, unanimously, in meeting 4 January 2018, join the motion of the Assembly.
