Odemira: President of the Republic goes to the Municipality to be with immigrants.


The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will travel this Saturday to Odemira, no Beja district, to be with immigrants.

The announcement was made by the head of state himself., in Belem, where the Candle Delivery Ceremony of Cáritas Portuguesa took place today, titled 'Ten Million Stars – A Gesture for Peace'.

“Emigrants are close to us. Now that our meeting is over, I leave for Odemira.. And I'm going to Odemira because I had promised to go there until the end of the year. We have several Odemiras in our country, all countries unfortunately have several Odemiras, that have positive aspects and complicated aspects”, sustained Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

With a group of scouts, the head of state said that it is necessary “go to those next, who come from I don't know how many countries, they speak I don't know how many languages, they have I don't know how many cultures” and they are “those who need it most”.

Already thinking about next year, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left a warning: “These crises hit deep, Inflation is not just numbers.”

“Inflation means a cut in wages, a cut in income, an impoverishment. And the higher, greater is this impoverishment. Those who suffer are close people who have to be very close to our thoughts and actions.”, completed.

In the last year there were complaints of immigrants in Odemira, municipality in the district of Beja, to live in deplorable conditions and 'chained’ human trafficking networks. Odemira has one of the largest immigrant communities in the country, what, among other occupations, work in agriculture.

Odemira is the largest municipality in the country in 2020 the emigrant population represented 40% do total.

There were also reports of abusive behavior by members of the Odemira GNR against immigrants..
