Odemira: SEF with eight immigration assistance surveys, trafficking and labor exploitation.


The Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) revealed that eight inquiries are underway for suspected illegal immigration aid, trafficking in persons for labor exploitation and forgery of documents in the municipality of Odemira.

Asked by the Lusa agency, o SEF, indicated that, within these eight surveys, “a total of eight employers and eight citizens as suspects are being investigated”.

According to the Aliens and Borders Service, only this year, in the District of Odemira, a total of nine inquiries were registered., one of them "concluded" and "with a proposal to send it to another criminal police agency", not having the SEF "proceeded with investigative steps".

As for the remaining eight ongoing investigations, adds that "there is no evidence of the existence of defendants", existing only "suspects of the practice of aiding illegal immigration, trafficking in persons for labor exploitation and forgery of documents".

According to SEF, in 2020, lived in the municipality of Odemira, on the Alentejo coast, 9.615 foreign nationals, most from countries like India, Pakistan and Nepal, being agriculture, “where small fruit greenhouses abound”, the activity sector “that employs the most immigrants”.

The SEF also states that it has developed awareness-raising actions, inspection and criminal investigation, guarding the situation of potential victims of human trafficking, in collaboration with various entities, among them the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), GNR and Social Security.
