OE2024: Government diverts flights to Tires and Figo Maduro. Beja without changes.

The Government really wants to move forward with the end of the Figo Maduro air base (at Lisbon airport) and with the diversion of private jet flights to Cascais airport (Tires). These were two of the Independent Technical Commission's proposals (CTI) and the Government welcomed them. Beja airport does not have any changes in OE2024 as predicted by the CTI.

“Considering the significant constraints currently existing at Humberto Delgado Airport (AHD), it is urgent to implement the adoption of several measures, that undergo the reorganization of air traffic in a more efficient way, as well as promoting effective operational coordination, that allows for improvement and greater efficiency of the AHD, considering that this infrastructure will have to be maintained until a new solution for the airport expansion in the Lisbon region is decided and implemented”, began by saying the Government in the proposal report for the OE 2024.

“Procedures are being initiated for structural improvements in the AHD, that undergo the relocation of the Figo Maduro military area (AT1) and the use of this area for civil operations”, can be read in the document.

At the same time, “valuing the national airport fabric, The aim is to migrate executive aviation from AHD to Cascais Municipal Aerodrome, looking for the resulting improvement of AHD, but also the specialization of the Cascais Municipal Aerodrome in the aforementioned traffic and investing in the migration of training traffic, so important for the continuity of national aviation, from Cascais Municipal Aerodrome to other national aerodromes spread across the country,
seeking to boost these airport hubs and reinforce territorial cohesion”.

It should be remembered that these two measures were already included in the study carried out by the Independent Technical Commission (CTI), which was released at the beginning of October.

What the CTI report defends?

The Air Base of Beja, “under current conditions of accessibility, cannot be a commercial alternative for managing the passenger traffic ends of AHD and Faro Airport, but can be considered to accommodate exclusive cargo and non-scheduled charter operations, freeing up AHD spaces. In current conditions of resource scarcity and inefficiency, there is no justification for maintaining spaces dedicated to the operation of AT1, which can be accommodated at another air base that does not compromise the operation of the AHD”.
