The PCP presented a request for the hearing of the Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Affairs with the aim of debating the existing situation with the influx of Timorese immigrants to the Alentejo.
In the request addressed to the chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, rights, Freedoms and Guarantees of the Assembly of the Republic and signed by deputy Alma Rivera, The PCP begins by recalling that the Municipality of Serpa addressed the Parliamentary Groups in order to “ask for the intervention of this sovereign body to resolve the major problem that constitutes the situation in which a large number of Timorese immigrants who have flocked to that county”.
Communists recall that “to the extent of their possibilities, and beyond those that are your responsibilities, the municipality sought to help people who were in the most dramatic situation, without accommodation and without any other support, temporarily housing a few dozen of these immigrants in a municipal pavilion, as a transitional and fallback solution, given that the facilities in question do not have the minimum conditions to ensure decent accommodation on a lasting basis”.
The steps taken by Serpa City Council with entities under government supervision with responsibilities regarding the reception of immigrants, in particular Social Security, the Foreigners and Borders Service, the Authority for Working Conditions and the National Republican Guard, “resulted unsuccessfully, So the situation drags on with no solution in sight.”, supports the deputy.
The PCP Parliamentary Group requests the urgent hearing of the Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Affairs, as responsible for the area of immigration, “to discuss the existing situation with the influx of Timorese immigrants to the Alentejo and the measures that the Government intends to take in order to create dignified reception conditions for these people”, justify.
