Communists promote reflection with several specialists on drought in Alentejo, causes, consequences, immediate and structural measures.
The PCP will hold the next day 18 July, in Beja, at Pax Julia's Cafeteria, at 3:30 pm an initiative entitled “To the Conversation about the Drought in Alentejo: causes, consequences, immediate and structural measures.”
The current dry period in Alentejo, and in general in the south of the country, It's not a new situation, dry periods are becoming more and more regular in the region.
This reality has serious consequences, be it in the medium and long term, as already warned by several studies on the risks of desertification in the Alentejo.
Its negative effects are increasingly evident in agricultural and livestock production, but go beyond that, even putting human supply at risk, in a very worrying way.
Being inseparable from global phenomena, like climate change, the causes of dry periods are equally inseparable from the lack of structural measures on the part of successive governments in the management of water resources and the option for the uncontrolled proliferation of super-intensive irrigated olive grove crops, almond and others.
It is the PCP's purpose with this initiative to deepen reflection on this matter and listen to various experts, associations and other entities, who accepted the PCP's invitation, which will contribute to a meeting of various points of view on this structural problem for the development of Alentejo and the country.
