PJ: Portuguese citizen detained involved in the attack on a Belgian soldier in Beja.


A man, of 29 year old, He was arrested yesterday, in Beja, by inspectors from the Faro Directorate of the Judiciary Police (PJ), being considered the main suspect in the attack on a Belgian soldier that occurred in the early hours of Saturday next to a bar in the city.

Has learned the Lidador News (LN), the individual was taken to the PSP Police Station by Criminal Investigation agents and later handed over to the PJ, that in addition to interrogating the suspect, carried out facial recognition by the victim.

In a statement, the PJ states that the suspect “is accused of committing the crime of qualified homicide in the attempted form”, and that the victim suffered injuries as a result of the attacks “who had to undergo surgical intervention”, justify.

It is recalled that following a fight between a group of Portuguese and soldiers from the Belgian Air Force that occurred shortly after the 05,00 hours, five Belgian citizens, aged between 27 and 53 year old, who were transported to the Emergency Service of Beja Hospital, following injuries resulting from attacks. Two of the injured were transported by the Beja Volunteer Firefighters and the remaining three in their own vehicles

The Belgian military, of 27 year old, suffered injuries caused by a sharp weapon and was the only one of the five who remained hospitalized until Sunday, with the rest being discharged on Saturday morning.

The Belgian military are part of a detachment of that country's Air Force that has been at the Air Base for a few days 11 (BA11), in Beja, participating in Exercise ABT-L 2024, responsibility of the Belgian armed forces. When there are these types of military movements in BA11, Many of the officers are based in hotels in the city, these being housed close to the place where the insults occurred.

The Portuguese citizen detained by the PJ must be present in the next few hours before a Criminal Investigation Judge of the Beja Court to apply coercive measures.
