Born in São Mamede de Ribatua, in the municipality of Alijó, António Cartageno was born in 9 June 1946, after completing primary studies in his homeland, attended the seminars in Beja and Olivais, tendo has been ordered father to 3 December 1972, at the Church of Carmo de Beja.
