The new average speed cameras have already arrived in Portugal. In the district of Beja they will be installed in IC1, crossing the counties of Ourique and Aljustrel and on the EN260 connection, Beja to Vila Verde de Ficalho.
There's a new traffic light, designated by H42, that you should pay attention to so you don't have any troubles: the National Road Safety Authority (Mor) released the new road sign that indicates an average speed camera.
will be placed 10 in Portugal in one of these 20 national roads.
Aveiro: A41; Beja: EN260 and IC1; withe Castle: IC8; Coimbra: A1 e EN109; Évora: A6 is IP2; Lighthouse: EN398; Lisbon: A9, EN10, EN6-7 e IC19; Port: A3; Santarém: A1 and Setúbal: EN10, EN378, EN4, EN5 and IC1;
And what does the average speed sign indicate?
These radars will calculate whether, average, vehicles drove faster than allowed on a given route. In other words, calculate not the instantaneous speed of a vehicle but whether it traveled faster than allowed between two points on the path.
Imagine driving on a road with a speed limit of 100 km/h. at a certain point, your vehicle registration is registered, as well as the passing time. Ahead, there is another radar that does exactly the same. Based on the entry and exit time of the route, the time taken by the vehicle to cover it is calculated: if it is covered in a time shorter than the minimum stipulated, means you haven't driven the speed limit.
According to Mor, the location of the radars – which will be installed in sections without junctions or exits – was decided, among other factors, “the level of accidents there and in which excessive speed proved to be one of the causes for this accidentâ€. Contracts for the supply and installation of new speed control cameras will cost around 5,6 million.
