until the 27 November, the Cante Festival takes place, in Serpa and Lisbon, destined to commemorate the entry of Cante in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The objective of this initiative is to publicize Cante and promote coexistence, sharing and exchanging experiences between singers and the public. All initiatives are free to enter. It is organized by Serpa City Council and the Cante Alentejano Museum, with the support of Casa do Alentejo in Lisbon and the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo.
Starting the next day 28 October, the first initiative to take place will be a presentation of the CD “Alentejo Ensemble”, from the Rancho de Cantadores de Paris, which presents a set of emblematic Alentejo fashions, but with a contemporary look. The disc presents several currents, from the traditional a cappella, to new arrangements for electric instruments, passing by groups of young people and women, having been recorded by six members of the Rancho, which Carlos Balbino, Cécile Lasserre, Claire Mathaut, Estela Basso, Karim Abdelaziz and Julia Alimasi. Rancho de Cantadores de Paris is the first multinational singing group, where none of the members are from Alentejo and which only includes one Portuguese.
This presentation will feature the participation of the Choral and Ethnographic Group of Casa do Povo de Serpa, Ranch of Singers of Aldeia Nova de São Bento, Female Choral Group As Ceifeiras de Pias, Choral and Ethnographic Group of the Senior Academy of Serpa and Os Alentejanos
In the month of November, the Festa do Cante program includes two book presentations, the first by Simão Miranda, dedicated to Cante Alentejano, and the second by Dulce Simões, relating to cultural practices; a photography exhibition; a concert presenting the CD “Cantares do Alentejo”, work by maestro and composer Fernando C. Limpet for classical guitars, by Bracara Augusta Guitar Trio. In all parishes in the municipality of Serpa there will be a lot of Cante, by the municipality's choral groups. To round off the celebrations, an official ceremony will be held for the VIII Anniversary of the Inscription of Cante Alentejano on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
