Near 17% of Portuguese citizens accessed or transmitted content from illegal digital sources to watch sporting events, percentage that rises to 34% among young people in 15 to 24 year old, according to a study by the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

The study reveals “significant trends†related to online piracy of live sporting events, with 12% of the total population accessing or transmitting content from illegal online sources.

According to analysis, young people among 15 and 24 years reported having illegally accessed online sporting events at a rate twice that of the total population.

Streaming is considered the most popular method of accessing illicit television content: 58% of piracy occurs through transmission and 32% through download.

Near 13% of young Portuguese people have suffered from sharing intimate photographs or videos of themselves and 15,7% that age group likes it when intimate content is shared as long as it has been authorized, completed a study at the University of Coimbra.

Despite the majority of young Portuguese (61,1%) block people on social media who send sexual messages, 15,5% feel comfortable sharing their intimate life on some applications and 18,1% send sexual messages to other people online, according to the results

According to researcher and teacher Inês Amaral, young people's exposure to this type of content appears earlier and earlier. Still according to the study, 28% of young people say they follow people who share their intimate life online.

According Anacom data, each Portuguese person consumed on average 308 GB of internet per month between January and March this year, more than 14% than in the same quarter last year.

The numbers also reveal that total fixed broadband Internet traffic in the period also increased, 17,3%, reflecting new historic highs for both indicators.

The overwhelming majority of fixed broadband connections (91%) enjoyed bandwidths equal to or greater than 100 Mbps. In July last year, Eurostat already placed Portugal as the fourth country in the European Union in terms of the proportion of accesses to fixed broadband with a speed equal to or greater than 100 Mbps.
