ULSBA: José Joaquim Fernandes Hospital has a recognized and functioning stroke unit.

The Local Health Unit now has a Stroke Unit in its facilities (stroke) Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes, in Beja.

Stroke is one of the main causes of death and permanent disability in Portugal and Baixo Alentejo was one of the few regions without a Stroke Unit (U-stroke) recognized at national level.

With the creation of ULSBA's U-AVC we have organized and implemented an emerging integrated response to stroke, which includes primary prevention of cerebrovascular risk factors, dissemination of stroke warning signs to the population, pre-hospital emergency with rapid stabilization and transport of patients, the implementation of action protocols for patients with acute stroke, differentiated assistance in the post-acute phase and rehabilitation care with a view to improving functional prognosis.

This unit aims to standardize the care provided and differentiated assistance to cerebrovascular patients by an organized and experienced multidisciplinary team in a controlled environment., with well-defined admission criteria and protocols, early initiation of treatment and rehabilitation with a view to reducing disability caused by stroke and prolonging quality life.

UAVC is located at Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes, in Beja, in the Internal Medicine service. It has an acute care ward with capacity for continuous cardiovascular and respiratory monitoring with a 24-hour surveillance nursing station and 2 subacute care wards.
