Aviation: Technical Commission defends fewer flights at Lisbon airport – and use Beja.

The Independent Technical Commission (CTI) released, Monday, a ‘Short-Term Analysis of the current situation at Humberto Delgado Airport’ (AHD), which contains a proposal for actions to improve its efficiency and operational effectiveness. Recommends using Beja for cargo and charter flights while there is no new airport.

Humberto Delgado Airport presents “operational and layout inefficiencies that affect the use of installed capacity”, consider at CTI, which gives some recommendations.

“It was clear that the AHD [Humberto Delgado Airport] presents operational and layout inefficiencies that affect the use of installed capacity and the possibility of a medium-term solution to increase capacity. Therefore, the focus of interventions in AHD must be oriented towards new infrastructure solutions with implementation in the short term., expedient and not limiting the current operation, as well as for operational optimization solutions that promote efficient use of installed capacity”, can read the report.

In practice, this CTI report proposes measures to improve Lisbon airport until a new one is built.

“The Air Base of Beja, in current accessibility conditions, cannot be a commercial alternative for managing the passenger traffic ends of AHD and Faro Airport, but can be considered to accommodate exclusive cargo and non-scheduled charter operations, freeing up AHD spaces”, consider at CTI.

He adds: “In current conditions of resource scarcity and inefficiency, there is no justification for maintaining spaces dedicated to the operation of AT1, which can be accommodated at another air base that does not compromise the operation of the AHD”.

“Finally, it is concluded that the decision and acceleration of a first phase of a new airport assumes an urgent nature, which materializes in the spillage resulting from the current AHD congestion situation, which could be reduced with the proposed actions, but not eliminated”, further states the CTI.

In practice, these recommendations now released by the CTI are a “set of actions that aim to mitigate the negative impacts of current AHD limitations, from a short-term perspective (5 a 7 year old), and assuming that the NAL will have at least a first operational phase within this period”.
