A worker at the Neves-Corvo Mine, managed by Somincor, owned by the Canadian multinational Lundin Mining Corporation, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, victim of an accident at work.
Filipe Venancio, of 43 year old, Shift Leader, natural Almodovar, would have been the victim of intoxication caused by the accumulation of gases at the bottom of the mine, after a stone explosion occurred in the previous turn.
According to information provided to Lidador NotĂcias (LN) by source of the Volunteer Firefighters of Castro Verde, “the corporation was called by the Operational Center for Urgent Patients (CODU) to 00,59 hours for a victim in cardiac arrest (PCR) who was in the medical station of the mine. Despite the maneuvers to which he was subjected, it was not possible to reverse the situation and the man died”, revealed.
Carlos Graça, responsible for the Litoral and Baixo Alentejo Local Unit of the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), confirmed the “existence of the accident, whose causes are being investigated by the teams on the ground. It's a deadly accident, which is under judicial secrecy and will be reported to the Public Ministry and the Labor Court”, concluded.
Somincor issued a statement in which it expresses “condolences” for the death of the worker, maintaining that the company is “deeply shocked and saddened” by the accident, ensuring that “you are providing full support to the victim’s family”. The company decided to suspend activities at the mine, being stopped for a period that is still unknown.
Eight operatives from the Castro Verde Fire Brigade were at the scene of the accident and assisting the victim., with the ambulance of INEM, support vehicle immediately life (SIV) Castro Verde, Emergency and resuscitation medical vehicle (VMER) do Hospital de Beja e GNR, supported by four cars.
The last fatal accident at the Neves-Corvo Mine took place in September 2020, when a worker died 40 year old.

Last Sunday he scored the goal of his team's tie against Moura, in a game of the District of Beja of the 1st Division, to 90 minutes.
